As the lead single from her debut solo album Love.Angel.Music.Baby, the song marked Stefani’s transition from her time with No Doubt to solo stardom, with lyrics reflecting on her journey. However, one particular lyric left Stefani questioning its source, especially as she delved into her latest song, “Purple Irises,” a collaboration with her husband, Blake Shelton.

Discussing the evolution of “Purple Irises,” Stefani shared, “This song really captures the idea of evolving as a human being.” She then drew a parallel to “What You Waiting For?” and expressed uncertainty about a specific line: “Born to blossom, bloom to perish.”

Stefani admitted, “I always questioned like, ‘Did I steal that from somebody?’ And if I did, guys, please let me know.” Co-written with Linda Perry, Stefani emphasized how the line felt like divine inspiration, remarking on the beauty of personal growth and artistic expression.

Reflecting on her own journey of self-discovery as a songwriter and performer, Stefani likened it to the natural process of blossoming into one’s true self. She shared insights into how her artistic endeavors have evolved over time, impacting both herself and her audience.

Regarding “Purple Irises,” Stefani discussed the extensive creative process behind the song, indicating its significance in representing her current artistic identity. She expressed satisfaction in reaching a point where the song felt authentically reflective of her present self, marking a milestone in her creative journey.
