Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, known for his multifaceted career, has added another feather to his cap with the launch of his own skincare line, Papatui.
Papatui, featuring products for skin, hair, body, and tattoo care, boasts cleaner ingredients and high performance, all at an affordable price point of under $10. Available in Target stores and online starting March 10, the line aims to normalize skincare for men and promote open conversations about grooming.
Johnson shared the inspiration behind Papatui, citing candid discussions with peers, often initiated at the gym, about fitness, recovery, and other topics, but rarely about skincare. “I always wondered, ‘Why are we whispering about skincare?’ It’s a conversation we should be having openly,” he explained in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
The wrestler-turned-actor spent three years assembling a team and delving into the world of clean ingredients and scent profiles to craft Papatui. With accessibility in mind, Johnson ensured that each product offered both quality and affordability.
The brand’s name, Papatui, reflects Johnson’s personal journey, drawing from his Samoan heritage and his role as a devoted father to three daughters. “Papa in Samoan means ‘rock,’ and it all came together in a kismet way,” he shared.
While Papatui is designed with men in mind, Johnson emphasized that the products are unisex, even revealing that his wife, Lauren Hashian, also uses them.
Johnson also credited actress Emily Blunt for introducing him to the benefits of toners, a skincare step he had previously overlooked. “Our toner balances the pH of your skin — it’s become a secret weapon for me,” he remarked, underscoring the value of feedback from friends and family in refining the product line.
For the scents, Johnson drew inspiration from iconic fragrances, collaborating with renowned perfume maker Frank Voelkl to develop scents like Coconut Lush, Sandalwood Suede, and Cedar Sport. He even revealed that the fragrance behind Papatui was inspired by Le Labo’s Santal 33.
To enhance the shopping experience, Johnson incorporated a unique feature into the soap packaging—a built-in scent tester, allowing customers to sample the fragrances before purchase.
With Papatui, Johnson aims to empower individuals to embrace skincare openly and confidently, ushering in a new era of grooming for all.
