In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Demi Lovato, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, shared heartfelt advice she would give her teenage self regarding beauty standards. Reflecting on her journey and growth, Lovato emphasized the importance of setting one’s own standards and cultivating self-love, regardless of societal pressures.
“At just 10 years old, I found myself in the spotlight, navigating the complexities of beauty standards,” Lovato, now 31, revealed. “What I would tell my teenage self is to not hold yourself to anybody else’s standards but your own. And if your own becomes too critical, then look within yourself and try to find that self-love. I think it’s really important to find self-love no matter what age you are.”
Having spent considerable time on sets and in the public eye, Lovato has gleaned valuable beauty tips, including the importance of removing makeup before bed. Sharing insights from her experiences, Lovato stressed the significance of skincare diligence, underscoring her commitment to healthy routines.
Moreover, Lovato has been candid about their struggles with bullying, addiction, and mental health, evolving to adopt healthier coping mechanisms and attitudes towards social media negativity. Empowered by personal growth and resilience, Lovato has shifted from seeking validation online to prioritizing positivity and self-compassion.
“I keep it positive. I’ll post, but I won’t do a deep dive in the comment section,” Lovato asserted. “I have compassion for the haters online too.”
In addition to their music career, Lovato has become a brand ambassador for Xeomin, an anti-wrinkle injection. Embracing transparency, Lovato sees this role as an opportunity to empower others to make choices that align with their self-expression and well-being.
“So don’t listen to naysayers or whatever that may try to tell you how to do your own beauty routine. I would just say listen to what makes you feel comfortable in your own skin,” Lovato concluded, embodying authenticity and self-empowerment in their journey.
