Ani DiFranco, the Grammy Award-winning musician, is embracing a new chapter in her career with her Broadway debut in Hadestown. Taking on the role of the Greek goddess Persephone alongside Lola Tung, DiFranco finds herself immersed in the Tony-winning musical, which she describes as “a startlingly wonderful work of writing and theater.”
Having contributed to Anaïs Mitchell’s 2010 concept album that served as the foundation for Hadestown, DiFranco feels a deep connection to the show’s music and narrative. Reflecting on her decision to join the production, she expresses enthusiasm for the challenge and inspiration it has brought her.
“For me, it’s about trying something totally new,” DiFranco shares. “It’s been an incredible challenge, but everything I’d hoped for in terms of growth and artistic fulfillment.”
Navigating the complexities of Broadway has been both exhilarating and demanding for DiFranco, who acknowledges the steep learning curve of musical theater. However, she embraces the opportunity to expand her artistic horizons and gain valuable experience in the theatrical realm.
As DiFranco continues her journey with Hadestown, she looks ahead to future projects, including the release of a children’s book titled Show Up and Vote. Despite the demands of her Broadway commitment, she remains grounded in her appreciation for family and home.
“While the journey has been enriching, I look forward to reuniting with my loved ones and returning to my roots,” DiFranco shares. “Six months away from home is a significant stretch, but the experience has been rewarding, and I cherish the memories made in New York.”
