Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang couldn’t stifle their laughter in their recent collaboration on Saturday Night Live!
The duo, both stars of the upcoming Wicked film adaptation, took center stage in a comedic Moulin Rouge sketch during the show’s latest episode. Putting a humorous spin on the iconic “Elephant Love Medley” from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, Grande and Yang added their own twist with a medley of unexpected songs, including the likes of “Happy Birthday.”
The sketch, introduced by Mikey Day as PBS’ “Ken Burnt,” humorously explored the notion of an extended medley, with Day joking that the original was “much, much longer” due to uncertainties around song rights.
Yang portrayed the character Christian, while Grande took on the role of Satine, as they hilariously navigated through an eclectic mix of tunes, from classic hits to unexpected choices like TLC’s “Creep” and Julie Andrews’ “Do-Re-Mi.”
Throughout the performance, the pair struggled to contain their laughter, especially as they incorporated “Happy Birthday” multiple times into the medley, leading to some amusing on-stage antics.
The sketch also included playful references to other songs and movie quotes, adding to the comedic charm of the performance.
Despite the laughter, Grande also showcased her musical talents with performances of tracks from her latest album, Eternal Sunshine, further highlighting her versatility as both a singer and a comedian.
Overall, the Moulin Rouge sketch provided a delightful blend of humor and musical entertainment, offering a glimpse of the chemistry between Grande and Yang ahead of their highly anticipated roles in the upcoming Wicked adaptation.
