NEW YORK (AP) — Following his recent Oscar nomination, Colman Domingo is set to star as Joe Jackson, the formidable father of the iconic pop star, in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic titled “Michael.”
Lionsgate, in an announcement on Thursday, revealed that Domingo has been selected for the role in Antoine Fuqua’s film, which is currently in production. Domingo, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in “Rustin,” brings his talent to the complex character of Joe Jackson.
Joe Jackson, who passed away in 2018, played a pivotal yet controversial role in the Jackson musical dynasty. He was instrumental in launching the careers of the Jackson 5 and fostering the solo endeavors of Michael and Janet. However, his management style was often divisive, and his parenting methods were criticized for being abusive, leading his children to distance themselves from him in later years.
Jaafar Jackson, a newcomer and Michael Jackson’s nephew, is set to portray the King of Pop in the film, produced by Graham King of “Bohemian Rhapsody” fame. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Michael Jackson estate.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Domingo stated, “I’m excited to be a part of a film that explores both the complicated soul of the legendary Michael Jackson as well as his impact on music and culture as a global icon. Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex, and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation.”
“Michael” is slated for a theatrical release in April of the following year.
